The Lafarge site is a cement manufacturing facility located on the eastern side of Sparkman Channel in the Port of Tampa. Three 500,000-gallon aboveground storage tanks used to store Bunker C fuel to support cement kilns were previously removed in the 1980s. The tank shells were cut off approximately 7-feet above the base of the tanks and backfilled with cement kiln dust and soil. A contamination assessment was conducted and revealed excessively contaminated soil in the vicinity of the Bunker C tanks.
TASK was contracted to remove the buried tank bottoms, remaining tank walls, associated piping and any visually contaminated soil. TASK removed over 4,500-feet of 2-inch, 3-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch diameter fuel lines. Three pump houses connecting the fuel lines were also uncovered and removed. Several hundred gallons of fuel and water were removed from the abandoned lines and disposed of. Soil was excavated from in and around the remaining tank bases. The metal tank shells and floors were cut and removed for recycling. TASK excavated more than 17,000 tons of Bunker C-contaminated soil.
