TASK Environmental, Inc. was contracted to perform site assessment and remedial activities at the Chemairspray site, a former airstrip used to support the aerial application of agricultural pesticides. TASK designed, constructed, and operated a pilot test for co-composting treatment of toxaphene-contaminated soil. TASK conducted a removal action to excavate highly contaminated soil, decontaminate the mixing facility, and dispose of contaminated debris. During the EPA removal action, soil was shipped by rail to an offsite incineration facility. TASK conducted a remedial action to excavate and dispose of the remaining areas of contamination, including the excavation and disposal of 5,000 tons of non-hazardous waste and 600 tons of characteristic hazardous waste. A mobile laboratory was utilized to provide real-time laboratory analytical results to guide the excavation and segregation of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. Post-closure groundwater monitoring was performed for 1 year following remediation to verify the success of the remedy. The site was granted No Further Action status by the FDEP.
